Death Abroad
Bringing Your Loved One Home from Abroad
Repatriation involves returning a deceased person from one country to another — often requiring medical certificates, translations, permits, and embassy approvals. Our experienced team handles every element with care, professionalism and dignity, ensuring your loved one is brought home as quickly and respectfully as possible.
We work with:
- Families in the UK and abroad
- Travel insurers and international assistance providers
- Embassies and consulates
- Local authorities, hospitals and coroners worldwide

One Step at a Time – Our Process
Here’s how we support you when a loved one dies overseas:
Step 1: Immediate Contact
Call us any time on 0113 322 7135. We are available 24/7 and will talk you through the next steps with calm reassurance and clear guidance.
Step 2: Information Gathering
We’ll ask for basic details — including where your loved one is, whether they were travelling with insurance, and if any local authorities are involved.
Step 3: Legal Documents & Permissions
We handle all required international paperwork, including:
- Death certificates & translations
- Consular reports
- Permits for transport
- Embalming and sealing documents
- Customs and airline clearance
Step 4: Careful Preparation
Your loved one will be transferred into the care of our international partners for preparation in line with local laws and cultural practices. We’ll coordinate everything until they’re safely on their way back to the UK.
Step 5: Safe Return & Next Steps
Upon arrival in the UK, we can return your loved one to a funeral director of your choosing, or continue caring for them with your instructions. Ashes repatriation and onward transportation can also be arranged if cremation is carried out overseas.

We Navigate The Process For You
The first thing to do when repatriation is required is to gather the details, we will require you to provide us. North of England International Repatriation Service will then take care of all further aspects of the repatriation process until the deceased has reached their final destination. The official documents we need for the deceased are:
- Death certificate x2
- Passport
- ID Card
We will then make application for an Out of England Certificate from the Local Coroner and a Free from Infection Certificate from the Hospital where the death has occurred. The deceased can then be brought into our care and we will arrange for full Embalming (which is a requirement for the transportation).

The Flight can then be booked once we have all the relevant documents (please be aware that some countries require a visit by us to the Embassy/Consulate of that country to produce the documents before flights can be confirmed. Some of these documents may need to be legalised first through the Foreign Office), an additional charge will need to be made for this service and is covered below in additional Charges.
We will also require you to provide contact information for your Funeral Directors in the return country including their full name, address, phone number and email address.
Please telephone us on 0113 3227135 anytime, day or night for the immediate attention.
