Immediate Steps to Take

Here’s what to do if someone has passed away in the UK and repatriation is required:

Step 1: Contact a Doctor or Hospital

If the death occurs in a hospital or care home, staff will guide you and arrange for a doctor to issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).

If the death happens at home or unexpectedly, call emergency services (999). A doctor or coroner may be involved, and a post-mortem or inquest may be necessary before documentation is released.

Step 2: Register the Death

The death must be registered at the local Register Office within five working days (eight in Scotland). You’ll need to provide:

  • Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
  • The deceased’s full name, address, date of birth and occupation
  • Details of the next of kin
  • Their passport or identification if available

You will be issued with a Death Certificate, which is required for all further arrangements. We recommend requesting several certified copies.

Step 3: Contact Us

Once the death has been registered, call us on 0113 322 7135 or email enquiries@neirs.co.uk.

From here, we will take over the repatriation process, including:

  • Collecting the deceased from any hospital, mortuary, care home or residence in the UK
  • Embalming and preparing the body for transport
  • Completing all legal documentation
  • Arranging translations and legalisation (where required)
  • Booking flights and coordinating with receiving funeral directors abroad
  • Liaising with embassies, consulates, and airlines
  • Ensuring all customs and regulatory requirements are met

We also provide translations, Apostilles (legalisation), and support with embassy/consulate requirements, if applicable.

What You’ll Need to Provide

To begin the process, we will ask you for:

  • Two copies of the death certificate
  • A copy of the passport or ID card of the deceased
  • Contact details for the funeral director or receiving family in the destination country
  • Any insurance documents (if applicable)
